Flood emergency preparedness

Many people refuse to prepare for any disaster. People think its bad luck to prepare thinking it will happen later on if they do. Some people get scared of just thinking about it. Or some say they can't afford it. Some will just rely on the government in case it will happen. And some are just too stubborn to start. Whatever reason we may have, for me it is still better to start on something small than not starting anything at all. As what my mom will always say, if you won't lose anything then you can try it.

Flood is the most common of all natural hazards. Some floods develop over a period of days and some only after a few hours. Be very aware of flood warnings, most especially if you are living in a low lying area.
Flood means, no power or clean water. Here are some tips of what to keep at your home all the time in cases like this.

1. Water - Household members must have at least 5 gallons of water each. Tap water is not safe to drink during this period and might be highly contaminated. It also has plenty of uses like for cooking and most especially if you have a baby at home.

2. Food- Stock up on canned goods, prefer the ones that are "easy open cans", but just in case keep an extra can opener. Crackers and protein bars for energy and baby food and formula if you have an infant. When buying these, make sure that expiration dates are way far too long. Place everything in a bag or a very sturdy box. Place it in a high cabinet or most preferably at the second floor of your house. Don't place it on the floor or ground level because you might forget it later on and could easily be reached by water.

3. Documentation- Store all important documents in a very safe place. Out from the windows and doors. Place it in a clear resealable envelope and into a place where you think that would not be damaged by water.

4. Extra clothes, blanket and sweaters,

5. Medicine kit- for bruises and insect bites.

6. Flashlight, extra batteries, candles and matches.

7. Battery operated radio- There will definitely be a power outage and there is actually a need for you to be aware of the warnings from the authorities.

These are only some of the suggestion I could think of and you can still add more depending on your families needs. For me having them in hand is very necessary, it does not mean that you need to buy them all at the same time. Lets say, you can buy one canned good and a pack of batteries and get the rest later or you can do them little by little until you've reached your personal lists.

Do you want to add something in the list? I'll be glad to hear your thoughts.
